COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Bioinformatics at Monash University requires the completion of 96 credit points and is structured to develop advanced skills in computational biology, data science, and biomedical research applications. Part A, Foundation Studies (12 credit points), provides an introductory grounding in essential areas such as biology, programming, and data analysis, ensuring students from diverse backgrounds gain the necessary baseline knowledge for advanced study. Part B, Core Studies (54 credit points), forms the central component of the program and focuses on key areas of bioinformatics, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistical modelling, and biological data interpretation. Students learn how to analyse large-scale biological datasets and understand complex biological systems, particularly in relation to disease mechanisms and drug discovery. Part C, Application Studies (30 credit points), provides practical, hands-on experience where students apply computational and analytical techniques to real-world biomedical problems. This may include projects involving multi-omic data integration, predictive modelling, and computational analysis in healthcare and biotechnology contexts. Through this applied learning, students develop strong technical and problem-solving skills that prepare them for research and industry environments. Together, these components equip graduates with the ability to bridge biology and computational science, enabling them to contribute to advancements in precision medicine, pharmaceutical research, and biomedical innovation.
