COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Architecture at Monash University is structured across several integrated study components that together build advanced architectural knowledge, design capability, and professional readiness. Part B, Studio Practices (48 credit points), forms the central component of the degree and focuses on intensive, practice-based learning in design studios. Here, students work on architectural projects that reflect real-world challenges, developing skills in spatial design, conceptual thinking, technical resolution, and creative problem-solving across different scales and contexts. This studio-based learning simulates professional architectural practice and encourages collaboration, experimentation, and innovation. Part C, Critical Contexts (6 credit points), provides theoretical grounding by exploring the cultural, historical, social, and environmental dimensions of architecture. This helps students understand how design decisions are influenced by broader global and local contexts and encourages critical reflection on the role of architecture in society. Part D, Disciplinary Practices (18 or 30 credit points), builds advanced professional and technical skills through more complex design work and applied learning experiences, preparing students for real architectural practice environments. Part E, Discipline Electives (12 or 24 credit points), offers flexibility for students to specialise in areas of interest such as urban design, sustainability, digital fabrication, construction technologies, or architectural theory. Together, these components ensure graduates develop a strong balance of creative, technical, and critical skills. The program prepares students for professional architectural practice, urban design roles, and related careers in the built environment, supporting their development into capable and reflective design professionals.
