COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Applied Linguistics at Monash University requires the completion of 96 credit points and is structured to provide a balanced combination of core theoretical knowledge, applied skills, professional experience, and elective flexibility in the field of language and communication. Part A, Core Studies (36 credit points), develops a strong foundation in applied linguistics, including language structure, language acquisition, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and language teaching methodologies. Students gain a deep understanding of how language functions in multilingual and global contexts, and how linguistic knowledge can be applied to solve real-world communication problems. Part B, Applied Studies (12 credit points), focuses on practical applications of linguistic theory, enabling students to engage with real-life language issues in areas such as education, communication, and intercultural settings. Part C, Professional Practice Studies (12 credit points), provides opportunities for workplace-related learning, allowing students to develop professional skills in language teaching, policy, translation, or communication roles. Part D, Elective Studies (36 credit points), offers flexibility for students to specialise further in areas of interest such as TESOL, language policy, translation studies, or intercultural communication. Together, these components prepare graduates for careers in education, language teaching (TESOL/TEFL), editing and publishing, translation and interpreting, government, NGOs, media, and corporate communication. The program equips students with advanced analytical, communicative, and intercultural skills required to work effectively in multilingual and global professional environments.
