COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Advanced Engineering (Smart Manufacturing Engineering) at Monash University requires the completion of 96 credit points and is structured to develop advanced expertise in modern manufacturing systems, digital technologies, and industrial innovation, along with practical or research experience. Part A, Core Studies (24 credit points), builds a foundation in advanced engineering practice, leadership, innovation, and problem-solving skills needed for complex industrial environments. Part B, Specialist Studies in Smart Manufacturing Engineering (36 credit points), focuses on the integration of artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, automation, and advanced manufacturing systems. Students learn how to optimise production processes, improve efficiency, and drive innovation using Industry 4.0 technologies. A key aspect of this specialisation is the use of digital twin technology, enabling simulation of entire production systems to enhance layout design, resource allocation, workflow optimisation, and predictive performance analysis. Students also study sensing and monitoring systems, neural networks, and sustainable manufacturing practices to support environmentally responsible production. Part C, Advanced Practice (24 credit points), requires students to complete either an Industry Experience pathway or a Master’s Thesis Research pathway. The Industry Experience option provides hands-on exposure to real-world manufacturing and engineering environments, while the Research Thesis option allows independent, supervised investigation into advanced manufacturing challenges. Part D, Specified Elective Studies (12 credit points), offers flexibility to explore complementary topics aligned with career goals.
