COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Advanced Engineering (Urban Systems Engineering) at Monash University requires the completion of 96 credit points and is structured to develop advanced expertise in designing and managing sustainable, resilient urban environments. Part A, Core Studies (24 credit points), provides a foundation in advanced engineering practice, leadership, innovation, systems thinking, and professional problem-solving skills needed for complex urban and infrastructure challenges. Part B, Specialist Studies in Urban Systems Engineering (36 credit points), focuses on integrating environmental engineering, water management, transportation systems, urban planning, and smart technologies. Students learn how these interconnected systems shape cities and how to design solutions that improve sustainability, efficiency, and livability. Emphasis is placed on addressing challenges such as rapid urbanisation, climate change, resource constraints, and population growth, with a strong focus on resilient and sustainable city development. Part C, Advanced Practice (24 credit points), requires students to complete either an Industry Experience pathway or a Master’s Thesis Research pathway. The Industry Experience option provides practical exposure through real-world urban infrastructure and engineering projects, while the Research Thesis option enables independent, supervised research into advanced urban systems challenges. Part D, Specified Elective Studies (12 credit points), allows students to broaden their knowledge in related disciplines aligned with their career goals. Together, these components prepare graduates for careers in urban planning, infrastructure engineering, environmental consulting, transportation systems, water resource management, and government or industry roles focused on building smart, sustainable, and resilient cities for the future.
