COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Public Health consists of 144 credit points divided into two parts: 90 points of core studies and 54 points of specified elective studies, delivered through a set of integrated themes that build professional capability across the degree. The personal and professional development theme focuses on understanding the expectations of health professionals, including effective communication, teamwork, critical thinking, ethical and legal considerations, and reflective practice, while also introducing research methodologies and their application to health. In the population, communities, health and illness theme, students explore the social, behavioural and environmental factors linked to disease and injury, as well as broad public health issues such as health promotion, epidemiology, statistics, community diversity, population trends and global health challenges, developing a strong grounding in evidence-based practice. The scientific basis of health care practice theme covers the core sciences underlying human health, including biomedical, physical, mathematical and behavioural sciences, providing the conceptual framework needed to understand health and disease processes. Professional practice skills form the final theme, focusing on the practical competencies required in public health settings, including designing programs to promote health, prevent disease and manage health risks across different populations and environments. Students learn to integrate research evidence with assessment and evaluation skills, applying this knowledge to health care across the lifespan. The structure allows flexibility through elective units that enable students to tailor their studies to areas of personal interest within public health, complementing the strong foundational knowledge delivered in the core units. Progression through the course is supported by a course progression map that guides unit selection each semester, ensuring students develop systematically from foundational knowledge to advanced skills. Overall, the structure is designed to develop well-rounded public health professionals who can understand complex health issues and implement effective solutions at a community and population level.
