COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Nursing at Monash University equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and professional attributes required to function as competent entry-level registered nurses. The program emphasises critical reasoning, evidence-based practice, and the integration of biomedical and social science concepts to underpin nursing care. Graduates will be able to provide ethical, respectful, and culturally responsive care, recognising the intrinsic value of all individuals irrespective of their culture, beliefs, or socio-economic status. The course develops leadership, supervisory, and management skills while fostering collaborative practice within interprofessional healthcare teams. Students learn to plan, implement, and critically evaluate nursing interventions that enable individuals and communities to achieve optimal health outcomes, independence, and self-management. Personal and professional development is a central theme, equipping students with strategies to maintain high professional standards, engage effectively with the nursing community, and contribute meaningfully to healthcare delivery. Clinical skills and practice are embedded throughout the program, with students gaining hands-on experience in diverse settings, including hospitals, community environments, and simulation laboratories. Bioscience knowledge, pharmacology, mental health, patient assessment, communication, and clinical reasoning are all applied in the development of competent, safe nursing practice. Students are trained in reflective practice, cultural competence, health promotion, and global and population health contexts, preparing them for increasingly complex healthcare environments. The course culminates in final-year clinical placements and a substantial professional project, synthesising theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Upon successful completion, graduates are eligible to register as professional nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), meeting the legal requirements to practise in Australia.
