COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music at Monash University is structured into four parts, integrating three overarching themes: music specialist study, music theory and ear training, and music context study. Part A, Specialist Studies, develops advanced skills in performance, composition, or music technology, culminating in a final examination or folio, with additional applied electives available. Part B, Music Theory and Ear Training, combines aural skill development with theoretical understanding through listening, analysis, performance, notation, and composition. Part C, Context Studies, exposes students to music-making in diverse cultural, historical, social, and professional settings, including a capstone experience. Part D, Free Elective Studies, allows students to broaden their knowledge of music or other Arts disciplines, or engage in study tours, internships, exchange programs, and enrichment opportunities. High-achieving students may also qualify for the accelerated Bachelor + Master’s pathway, replacing 24 credit points of free electives with units from the chosen master’s degree and continuing postgraduate studies upon meeting required academic standards. The course totals 144 credit points, providing structured guidance on unit enrolment each semester to ensure a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge, practical expertise, and professional readiness.
