COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Health Sciences at Monash University equips students with a comprehensive understanding of human health, disease, and health promotion, preparing graduates to apply this knowledge across a variety of professional contexts. The course fosters in-depth knowledge of biomedical science, population health, preventive medicine, cultural diversity, and social systems, while providing opportunities to tailor learning through specified and free electives, allowing students to explore areas of individual interest and develop specialised expertise. Students are trained to collect, organise, analyse, interpret, and report health data, integrating scientific knowledge with practical skills to inform evidence-based decision-making. Effective communication with diverse audiences is emphasised, alongside the ability to work collaboratively in inter-professional teams and independently, promoting leadership, ethical practice, and social responsibility as global citizens. The degree is structured across three components: core studies, specified electives, and free electives, totalling 144 credit points. Core studies provide foundational knowledge in biomedical science, human systems, health technology, population health, and public health practice, while fostering critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and professional development. The specified electives allow students to pursue areas of particular interest within health sciences, enhancing their depth of knowledge and practical capabilities. Free electives offer the flexibility to broaden interdisciplinary learning, including opportunities to engage with global health, health communication, and allied disciplines. The curriculum integrates themes of personal and professional development, population and community health, and the scientific basis of healthcare practice, ensuring graduates possess a holistic understanding of health and illness within social, behavioural, and environmental contexts.
