COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Fine Art at Monash University equips students with the skills, knowledge, and experience to pursue professional careers in contemporary art, with specialisations in Fine Art or Art History and Curating. This program develops graduates capable of generating sustainable cultural practices and critically engaging with diverse forms of artistic and cultural production. Students learn to contextualise their work within interdisciplinary frameworks, applying research methods, critical thinking, and creative practice to explore the social, cultural, and ethical dimensions of contemporary art. The Fine Art specialisation focuses on studio-based learning, enabling students to create independent and collaborative works, develop technical proficiency, and communicate artistic ideas to varied audiences. Students culminate their learning through advanced studio projects that are presented in the graduand exhibition, demonstrating both conceptual depth and professional readiness. In the Art History and Curating specialisation, students acquire expertise in the analysis, interpretation, and presentation of artworks, preparing them for curatorial, research, and heritage-related careers. Learning is enriched by access to Monash’s creative facilities, including the Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA), the MADA Gallery, and the student-run Intermission Gallery, offering opportunities for exhibition, engagement, and professional networking. The program emphasises respect for Indigenous knowledge, culture, and values, ethical cultural participation, and the recognition of diversity within local and global contexts. Additional elective units allow students to pursue interdisciplinary interests, internships, or study abroad experiences, further enhancing their professional and academic development. By integrating critical contexts, disciplinary and studio practices, and applied learning, graduates emerge as creative, reflective, and adaptable practitioners, capable of contributing meaningfully to contemporary cultural production, the arts industry, and society at large. Completion of this degree also provides pathways to advanced research through the Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) program for high-achieving students.
