COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Industrial Design double degree requires the completion of 240 credit points, combining rigorous engineering education with creative, studio-based design studies. The Engineering component consists of 144 credit points and provides students with a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, mechanics, materials science, thermodynamics, manufacturing processes, and systems engineering. Students progressively develop advanced skills in analysis, modelling, design, and problem-solving, enabling them to engineer complex mechanical systems and products that are efficient, reliable, and sustainable. The Design component consists of 96 credit points and focuses on industrial design principles, human-centred design, creativity, aesthetics, ergonomics, and product development. Through studio-based learning, students explore conceptual design, sketching, prototyping, and digital modelling to transform ideas into functional and visually compelling products. This component emphasises innovation, user experience, and practical making skills, supported by access to advanced fabrication tools and workshops. The integration of both components ensures graduates are capable of bridging engineering precision with creative design thinking. Students learn to develop products that are not only technically sound but also functional, ergonomic, and aesthetically refined. Upon completion of all 240 credit points, graduates are well prepared for careers in product design, mechanical engineering, industrial design, manufacturing, research and development, and innovation-driven industries. The degree equips students with a versatile skill set that enables them to design and engineer solutions across a wide range of fields, including consumer products, medical devices, transportation systems, and emerging technologies.
