COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Materials Engineering (Honours) requires the completion of 192 credit points and is structured to provide students with a strong foundation in engineering principles, broad interdisciplinary knowledge, and advanced expertise in materials engineering. Part A consists of 30 credit points of Engineering fundamentals and design studies, where students develop essential skills in mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering analysis, and design methodologies. These studies establish the technical foundation required to understand and solve complex engineering problems. Part B includes 18 credit points of Breadth studies, allowing students to explore subjects outside their core engineering discipline and develop broader perspectives, communication abilities, and interdisciplinary understanding. Parts C, D, and E together comprise 144 credit points of Specialist studies, forming the major component of the degree. These units focus on advanced topics such as metallurgy, polymers, ceramics, composites, nanomaterials, biomaterials, materials processing, corrosion, failure analysis, and materials characterisation. Students gain practical experience through laboratory work, research activities, and engineering design projects that address real-world challenges in manufacturing, aerospace, biomedical, energy, and sustainability sectors. The program progressively develops technical expertise alongside professional skills including teamwork, project management, research, and technical communication. Upon completion of all 192 credit points, graduates are well prepared for careers in materials development, manufacturing, mining, renewable energy, biomedical technologies, quality assurance, and advanced research. The degree equips students with the knowledge and skills required to create innovative materials that improve performance, sustainability, and technological advancement across diverse industries.
