COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering (Honours) requires the completion of 192 credit points, structured to build a strong foundation in engineering principles, complementary interdisciplinary knowledge, and advanced biomedical specialisation. Part A consists of 30 credit points of Engineering fundamentals and design studies, where students develop core skills in mathematics, physics, engineering design, systems thinking, and problem-solving that underpin all areas of biomedical engineering practice. Part B includes 18 credit points of Breadth studies, allowing students to explore subjects outside their core engineering focus, helping to broaden their academic perspective and strengthen communication, analytical, and interdisciplinary thinking skills. Parts C, D, and E together comprise 144 credit points of Specialist studies, which form the core of the degree and focus on biomedical engineering theory and practice. These units cover areas such as biomechanics, biomaterials, medical instrumentation, biomedical signal processing, physiological systems, computational modelling, and healthcare technology design. Students also engage in laboratory work, design projects, and industry-relevant applications that simulate real-world biomedical challenges. This progression from foundational engineering knowledge to advanced specialised study ensures graduates are well prepared for complex problem-solving in healthcare and technology environments. Throughout the course, students also develop teamwork, research, communication, and professional engineering skills. Upon completion of all 192 credit points, graduates are equipped for careers in medical device design, healthcare engineering, research and development, biomedical instrumentation, and related industries. The degree also provides pathways into med-tech innovation, consultancy, and healthcare technology entrepreneurship, reflecting the broad impact of biomedical engineering.
