COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Design at Monash University equips students with the knowledge, skills, and creativity needed to respond to complex social, cultural, and technological challenges through design. This degree allows students to specialise in Collaborative, Communication, Industrial, or Spatial Design, fostering expertise in their chosen field while developing the ability to work across disciplines. Graduates learn to apply design knowledge and skills to analyse opportunities, investigate diverse contexts, and develop solutions that are socially responsible, ethical, and globally relevant. The program emphasises curiosity, critical thinking, and self-reflection as key tools for both individual and collaborative design practice. Students begin with Critical Contexts, exploring historical, cultural, and contemporary practices to situate their own work within the broader global design landscape and communicate ideas effectively. Disciplinary Practices build foundational skills in drawing, studio work, and occupational health and safety, providing essential practical and intellectual capabilities. Through Studio Practices, students engage deeply with their specialisation: Collaborative Design focuses on co-design and addressing societal and environmental challenges; Communication Design develops skills in traditional and emergent media, storytelling, and interactive communication; Industrial Design emphasises product realisation, ergonomics, materials, and production methods; and Spatial Design explores the translation of 2D concepts into 3D installations and adaptive spaces. Students consolidate their learning through thematic projects and hands-on briefs that foster creativity, problem-solving, and practical application. The degree also offers Free Electives to broaden interdisciplinary knowledge or gain workplace experience through internships and study abroad opportunities. For Monash Indonesia students, elective Indonesian Studies units provide insight into the country’s political, social, and cultural values. Overall, the Bachelor of Design prepares graduates to become innovative, reflective, and socially responsible designers capable of making meaningful contributions to contemporary design practice across local and global contexts.
