COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Monash University offers an interdisciplinary and comprehensive approach to understanding human health and disease. The course is structured around a core set of biomedical units that provide a solid foundation in scientific principles, clinical knowledge, research skills, and professional development. From the outset, students are immersed in a curriculum designed by leading experts, ensuring they are equipped for careers in biomedical and health sciences or for further academic study.The course begins with the Foundations of Biomedical Sciences, where students develop a grounding in the fundamental scientific disciplines that underpin biomedical knowledge, including chemistry, biology, and physics. This base supports further exploration into the structure and function of the human body through the Biomedicine of Health and Disease component. Here, students study cells, tissues, organs, and systems across the human lifespan, integrating key biomedical areas such as anatomy, genetics, microbiology, pharmacology, neuroscience, and physiology.Through the Biomedicine and Society stream, students explore the broader implications of biomedical science in public health, policy, and society. This includes how scientific discoveries translate into clinical practices and health systems, and how global health challenges are addressed through evidence-based medicine, epidemiology, and health policy.Embedded throughout the course are core units on research methods and laboratory techniques. Students engage in practical sessions using world-class facilities, developing skills in experimental design, data collection, analysis, and communication. This scientific training is complemented by a focus on personal and professional development. The program fosters communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and an understanding of inclusion and diversity, alongside wellbeing and career development support.Finally, elective units allow students to tailor their degree to their interests. Whether deepening their expertise in biomedical science or exploring fields such as business, languages, or global studies, students can shape their academic journey to align with their future goals.
