COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Applied Data Science and the Bachelor of Applied Data Science Advanced (Honours) are structured to develop strong foundations in mathematical, statistical, and computational skills while offering practical experience in real-world data analysis. Across the three years of study, the curriculum builds progressively to ensure students are prepared to meet the demands of the data science field, combining theory, programming, and applied research.In the first year, students begin with core units such as Data Challenges 1 and 2, where they are introduced to real data problems and foundational methods of analysis. These are complemented by mathematical subjects such as Discrete Mathematics for Computer Science and introductory calculus and modelling courses, which are essential for data-driven problem-solving. The inclusion of applied studies allows students to explore how data science is used in various real-world contexts.In the second year, the program deepens with Data Challenges 3 and 4, introducing more complex data sets and analytical techniques. Students also begin studying computer science more formally through subjects like Introduction to Computer Science and Modelling for Data Analysis. Advanced mathematical subjects such as Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus, and Computational Mathematics provide the theoretical backbone for understanding data structures, algorithms, and numerical methods.By the third year, students are prepared for higher-level study and application. The final year includes a 12-point capstone subject, Advanced Data Challenges, which integrates learning across the degree. Students also undertake advanced units in Deep Learning, Advanced Data Analysis, and can choose between subjects like Random Processes, Computational Linear Algebra, and Optimisation. Elective units in the third year offer the flexibility to tailor the degree to individual interests or career goals. Overall, the program provides a comprehensive education in applied data science, equipping graduates with the skills needed to analyse complex data and contribute meaningfully in a data-driven world.
