COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Actuarial Science is structured around four key themes that guide student learning and development: foundation commerce knowledge, specialist discipline knowledge, capstone experience, and elective study. The program begins with foundation commerce knowledge, where students gain a thorough understanding of economics and econometrics and explore how these disciplines influence decision-making in business, professional practice, and public policy. These foundational units establish the analytical and conceptual framework necessary for further study and professional application.Specialist discipline knowledge is the second theme, focusing on developing students’ expertise in actuarial science. These units are designed to cultivate critical and creative thinking, enabling students to apply mathematical, statistical, and financial concepts to solve real-world problems in commerce. Many of these units align with the professional accreditation standards set by bodies such as the Actuaries Institute, helping students to meet the academic requirements needed for future professional qualifications.The third theme is the capstone experience, a culminating unit that integrates the knowledge and skills students have acquired throughout their degree. This unit is designed to reflect real-life scenarios, encouraging students to apply their actuarial knowledge in a comprehensive and practical manner. It serves as a bridge between academic study and professional practice, preparing graduates for the workplace.The final component is elective study, which allows students to broaden their learning either within actuarial science or in other areas of commerce. Students may also choose to take elective units from across the University, enabling them to tailor their degree to their interests or to complete a major or minor in another discipline. This flexible structure ensures that graduates emerge with both a deep understanding of actuarial science and a broad perspective on commerce, equipped to adapt to a variety of roles in the financial and insurance industries.
