COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Teaching (Birth to Five Years) core program is structured to develop highly skilled early childhood educators who can support children’s learning, development and wellbeing from infancy through to preschool age. The curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with practical teaching skills across key areas of early childhood education, including child development, play-based learning, curriculum design and pedagogical leadership. Students explore how young children learn through play, language, literacy, the arts, science and mathematics, and how educators can design inclusive and engaging learning environments that support diverse needs. A strong emphasis is placed on understanding infants’ and young children’s developmental stages, as well as building responsive relationships with children, families and communities. Professional practice units provide extensive hands-on experience in early learning settings, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real-world environments and progressively develop teaching competence. Leadership and reflective practice are also key components, preparing graduates to contribute meaningfully to early childhood education settings and collaborate effectively with colleagues. The program further highlights the importance of outdoor learning environments, cultural responsiveness, and inclusive education practices. Through a combination of coursework and supervised placements, students build the confidence, judgement and practical expertise required to work as professional early childhood teachers. Graduates are prepared for roles in childcare centres, preschools and other early learning services, supporting children’s holistic development during their most critical years.
