COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Applied Linguistics and TESOL is designed to develop advanced expertise in language education, communication and second language acquisition, preparing graduates to teach English effectively in diverse global contexts. The program combines theoretical insights with practical training to help students understand how languages are structured, how they are learned, and how they are best taught to speakers of other languages. In the foundation component, students build core teaching capabilities through units in TESOL methodologies, linguistics, second language acquisition and supervised practicum experience, ensuring they can apply classroom theory in real teaching environments. The core component deepens this knowledge through specialised study in areas such as phonology and pronunciation teaching, pragmatics and intercultural communication, language testing and evaluation, curriculum design, literacy development, and discourse analysis. Students also develop strong research skills and the ability to critically evaluate classroom practices and language programs. The flexible component allows further specialisation in areas such as English for academic purposes, language teaching beyond the classroom, language for specific purposes, and intercultural language contact. Overall, the degree equips graduates with the pedagogical, analytical and intercultural competencies required to design effective language learning experiences and contribute meaningfully to English language education in Australia and internationally.
