COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Sciences and Bachelor of Psychology double degree combines the scientific study of communication with a broad understanding of human behaviour, health and cognition, preparing students for careers in health, education, research and allied fields. The Speech and Hearing Sciences component builds a strong foundation in linguistics, phonetics, language structure, speech production, hearing science and communication disorders. Students study areas such as psycholinguistics, phonology, syntax, language use in society and Australia’s Indigenous languages, alongside practical training in speech, hearing and language science. Advanced units explore speech acoustics, perception, language development and communication disorders across the lifespan, culminating in a capstone placement-based unit that integrates theory and practice. The Psychology component provides a comprehensive grounding in psychological science, including human behaviour, cognition, development, social psychology, biopsychology, psychopathology and research methods. Students also study health systems, evidence-based practice and wellbeing, gaining strong analytical and statistical skills through design and statistics units. A final capstone unit focuses on applying psychological theory in real-world contexts. Together, the two degrees develop strong skills in communication analysis, research, data interpretation and human behaviour understanding. Graduates are well prepared for further study in speech pathology, audiology or psychology, as well as careers in healthcare support, education, disability services, research, communication services and community health roles.
