COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Sciences is a structured program designed to build a strong foundation in linguistics, psychology, health sciences, and communication disorders, preparing students to understand how humans produce, perceive, and use language. The core curriculum integrates essential knowledge from multiple disciplines, including human structure and function, evidence-based health practice, psychology, and sociocultural perspectives on communication. Students are introduced to key areas such as linguistics, language myths and realities, phonology, syntax, semantics, and language and cognition, along with specialised study of Australia’s Indigenous languages and the relationship between language and society. The program also develops scientific understanding of speech, hearing, and auditory processes through units such as sounds of language, speech acoustics and perception, and hearing technologies and the auditory brain. Advanced study focuses on communication across the lifespan, including child language acquisition and speech production, as well as communication disorders. Practical learning is embedded through professional practice units and the PACE capstone, which connects students with real-world applications in speech, hearing, and language science. Overall, the degree equips students with analytical, scientific, and practical skills to understand communication in depth and prepares them for postgraduate study or careers in healthcare, linguistics, education, and communication-related fields.
