COURSE CURRICULUM

The Statistical Data Science major is a 240 credit point program structured around a 160 credit point core zone and an 80 credit point flexible zone designed to develop strong statistical, computational and analytical expertise. The core of the degree includes foundational scientific training through FOSE1000 Becoming a Scientist, FOSE2000 The Science Practitioner and the capstone unit FOSE3000, alongside introductory statistics and computing units such as STAT1170 or STAT1371 and FOSE1025 Scientific Computing or FOSE1030 Introduction to Python Programming. Students also complete additional science electives to broaden their quantitative and interdisciplinary understanding. The major itself consists of 80 credit points focused on advanced statistical theory and applications. Key core units include STAT1379 Statistical Technologies for Data Science, STAT2114 Design of Experiments and Surveys, STAT3103 Multivariate Analysis and Statistical Learning, STAT3301 Regression and Time Series and STAT3310 Statistical Inference, which build expertise in modelling, prediction and data interpretation. Supporting elective options include foundational mathematics such as MATH1010 or MATH1015, along with introductory and intermediate statistics and probability units like STAT2170, STAT2371, STAT2372 and STAT2173. This structure ensures students develop both theoretical depth and practical skills in handling complex data. Graduates are prepared for careers in data science, analytics, finance, government and research, with strong capabilities in statistical reasoning, computational methods and real-world problem solving across diverse industries.
