COURSE CURRICULUM

The Marine Science major is part of a 240-credit-point degree made up of a 160-credit-point core zone, an 80-credit-point flexible zone, and an 80-credit-point major. The core zone builds essential scientific foundations through units such as FOSE1000 Becoming a Scientist and FOSE2000 The Science Practitioner, alongside the capstone FOSE3000 Making Science Work for You and Society, which integrates learning across the program. Students also develop quantitative and computational skills through STAT1170 Introductory Statistics or STAT1371 Statistical Data Analysis, and either FOSE1025 Scientific Computing or FOSE1030 Introduction to Python Programming, depending on their pathway. Additional elective units provide interdisciplinary exposure across biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and environmental sciences. The Marine Science major itself focuses on understanding ocean systems and marine life from ecological, environmental, and biological perspectives. It begins with BIOL1310 Organisms to Ecosystems and EESC1160 Blue Planet, followed by BIOL2610 Biological Data Analysis and BIOL2410 Ecology to build analytical and ecological foundations. Students then progress to EESC2160 Climate and Oceans, BIOL3440 Aquatic Ecosystems, EESC3310 Marine Environmental Issues, and BIOL3340 Marine Megafauna, which explore marine environments, climate interactions, and large marine species in detail. Overall, the program develops strong scientific, analytical, and fieldwork skills, preparing graduates to address challenges such as ocean conservation, climate change, and sustainable marine resource management.
