COURSE CURRICULUM

This Earth and Environmental Sciences major is part of a 240-credit-point degree, consisting of a 160-credit-point core zone, an 80-credit-point flexible zone, and an 80-credit-point major. The core zone develops foundational scientific skills through units such as FOSE1000 Becoming a Scientist and FOSE2000 The Science Practitioner, along with the capstone unit FOSE3000 Making Science Work for You and Society, which integrates learning across the degree. Students also build essential quantitative and computing skills through STAT1170 Introductory Statistics or STAT1371 Statistical Data Analysis, and either FOSE1025 Scientific Computing or FOSE1030 Introduction to Python Programming, depending on their pathway. Additional elective science units provide interdisciplinary exposure across biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and environmental sciences. The Earth and Environmental Sciences major (80 credit points) focuses on understanding Earth systems and environmental processes across geological, ecological, and atmospheric domains. It begins with EESC1150 Planet Earth and ENVS1017 The Living Environment, followed by ENVS2364 Introduction to Geographic Information Science and Remote Sensing and ENVS2266 Earth Surface Processes. Students then advance to EESC2150 Mass Extinctions and the Hidden History of Earth, ENVS3383 Environmental Analysis Using Remote Sensing and GIS, ENVS3238 Environmental Quality and Assessment, and ENVS3240 Environmental Change. Overall, the program equips students with strong analytical, spatial, and scientific skills to understand Earth systems and address global challenges such as climate change, sustainability, and environmental management.
