COURSE CURRICULUM

This Chemistry major is part of a 240-credit-point degree structure consisting of a 160-credit-point core zone, an 80-credit-point flexible zone, and an 80-credit-point major. The core zone establishes essential scientific and academic foundations through units such as FOSE1000 Becoming a Scientist and FOSE2000 The Science Practitioner, alongside the capstone unit FOSE3000 Making Science Work for You and Society, which integrates learning across the program. Students also develop quantitative and computational skills through STAT1170 Introductory Statistics or STAT1371 Statistical Data Analysis, and either FOSE1025 Scientific Computing or FOSE1030 Introduction to Python Programming, depending on their chosen pathway. Additional elective science units provide breadth across disciplines including physics, biology, mathematics, and environmental science. The Chemistry major (80 credit points) builds progressively from foundational to advanced knowledge, beginning with CHEM1001 Foundations of Chemical and Biomolecular Sciences 1 and CHEM1002 Foundations of Chemical and Biomolecular Sciences 2, followed by CHEM2201 Analysis and Measurement and CHEM2401 Physical Chemistry I. Students then study CHEM2601 Synthesis, before advancing to CHEM3202 Advanced Analysis and Measurement and CHEM3601 Advanced Synthesis, and culminating in CHEM3801 Medicinal Chemistry. Overall, the program combines theoretical understanding, laboratory practice, and analytical training to prepare graduates for careers in chemical sciences, research, industry, and related professional fields.
