COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science with a major in Biotechnology is a 240 credit point program designed to develop strong scientific, analytical and laboratory-based skills for innovation in biological and chemical sciences. The core zone includes 20 credit points of essential units that introduce students to scientific thinking through Becoming a Scientist and The Science Practitioner, followed by a capstone unit, Making Science Work for You and Society, which integrates learning and applies it to real-world scientific and societal challenges. Students also complete foundational elective units in statistics, choosing between Introductory Statistics and Statistical Data Analysis, along with computing units such as Scientific Computing or Introduction to Python Programming to build essential data analysis and programming skills. Additional science electives allow students to explore related disciplines such as biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and environmental science. A 10 credit point PACE unit provides practical experience in a scientific or industry setting. The Biotechnology major accounts for 80 credit points and includes core units such as foundations of chemical and biomolecular sciences, analysis and measurement, biochemistry and cell biology, microbiology and molecular biology, advanced biochemistry and cell biology, macromolecules, and molecular biology and genomics. This structure provides a strong interdisciplinary foundation in biological and chemical sciences while emphasising laboratory techniques, experimental design and research skills. Graduates are prepared for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical research, diagnostics, environmental science and related industries, as well as for postgraduate study in biomolecular sciences and life sciences research.
