COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Psychological Science with a major in Counselling Psychology is a 240 credit point program designed to develop a strong foundation in understanding human behaviour, mental health and therapeutic practice. The core zone includes 110 credit points of essential units that introduce students to psychology, health systems, evidence-based practice and scientific thinking. Students study key areas such as social and personality psychology, developmental psychology, perception and cognition, biopsychology and learning, psychopathology, and advanced research methods through Design and Statistics II and III. Additional foundational learning includes topics such as misconceptions in the modern world, helping students build critical thinking skills and the ability to evaluate psychological information. Elective units allow further exploration of psychology in context, health and wellbeing, lifestyle factors and health in society, along with advanced-level study in specialised topics. A 10 credit point capstone unit, PACE: Psychological Science: Putting Theory into Practice, integrates academic learning with real-world application. The Counselling Psychology major accounts for 80 credit points and focuses on practical and applied psychological skills, including counselling skills training, advanced counselling approaches, principles of behaviour change, psychological health and wellbeing, and related health and wellbeing studies. This structure builds both theoretical knowledge and practical counselling skills. Graduates are prepared for careers in counselling support roles, mental health services, community services, human support services and further postgraduate study in psychology or counselling, with strong skills in communication, empathy, research and evidence-based practice.
