COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Planning core zone comprises 280 credit points and provides a structured foundation in urban, environmental, and regional planning. It includes 260 credit points of essential units that develop key knowledge and skills across geography, environmental studies, planning systems, and social and spatial analysis. Students begin with foundational subjects such as Dharug Ngurra, The Living Environment, Introducing Human Geography, and Planning Systems, before progressing to more advanced topics including cities and climate change, geographic information science, environmental management, and urban dynamics. The program also explores critical themes such as environmental justice, disasters and resilient communities, urban economies, social impact assessment, environmental planning law, and Indigenous perspectives on settler colonialism and decolonisation. Practical and applied learning is strengthened through fieldwork, planning experience placements, and urban and regional case studies. A capstone unit, Planning and Design, integrates knowledge from across the degree into a final applied project. In addition, students complete 10 credit points of elective study, allowing them to expand into areas such as computer programming, cybersecurity, databases, business systems, or statistical analysis to support planning-related skills. The remaining flexible zone further allows personalisation of the degree. Overall, the program combines theory, technical training, and practical experience to prepare students for professional planning roles focused on sustainable, inclusive, and resilient urban and regional development.
