COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Medical Sciences with a major in Medicinal Chemistry provides a structured pathway into the study of how chemical principles are applied to the discovery and development of modern medicines. The core zone establishes a strong foundation in biological and chemical sciences through essential units in genetics, human biology, chemistry, statistics, human structure and function, and contemporary health issues, supported by foundational studies in medical sciences. These core subjects ensure students develop essential scientific literacy, analytical thinking, and an understanding of health-related challenges. A final-year capstone unit integrates learning across the degree, applying medical science knowledge to real-world contexts. The major then builds specialised expertise in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, and medicinal chemistry. Students study drug action at a molecular level through pharmacology fundamentals and explore how compounds are designed, synthesised, analysed, and optimised for therapeutic use. Key areas include analysis and measurement techniques, synthetic chemistry, and advanced medicinal chemistry, which focus on designing effective and selective pharmaceutical agents.
