COURSE CURRICULUM

The curriculum is designed to build a strong foundation in historical knowledge, research methods and public engagement while developing practical skills for careers in history, heritage and cultural institutions. Students begin by exploring how history is represented through film, television and museums, gaining an understanding of historical storytelling, cultural preservation and the role of museums in interpreting the past. As the program progresses, studies examine global sporting heritage, biography, family history and research methods used in public history and heritage projects. Advanced units focus on communicating historical knowledge to diverse audiences, analysing the significance of war memorials and Anzac narratives, and evaluating the cultural, political and commercial influences that shape public memory. Students also investigate contemporary issues affecting museums, archives, heritage organisations and historical interpretation in modern society. Alongside the major, the curriculum includes core studies in humanities, critical thinking and a capstone project that integrates knowledge gained throughout the degree. Students also complete a practical engagement unit through community or industry-based learning, select professional experience or internship options, and choose either an international exchange experience or a faculty minor. The flexible study component enables students to broaden their academic interests by undertaking additional majors, minors or elective units from a wide range of undergraduate disciplines, supporting personalised learning and diverse career pathways.
