COURSE CURRICULUM

The curriculum provides comprehensive training in archaeological theory, scientific methods and field-based research, enabling students to investigate ancient societies through material evidence. Students begin by exploring the archaeology of Greece and Rome while gaining an understanding of archaeology's role in interpreting human history and society. Foundational studies introduce laboratory techniques used to analyse artefacts, followed by specialised units examining the archaeology of ancient civilisations such as the Minoans and Mycenaeans through both textual and material evidence. The program develops practical skills in archaeological field methods, excavation techniques, recording, surveying and the ethical management of cultural heritage. Advanced units examine burial practices and funerary archaeology, the emergence and transformation of early states, visual culture in ancient Egypt and Western Asia, and landscape archaeology to understand how people interacted with and shaped their environments over time. Alongside the major, students complete core studies in historical sources, archaeology, history and heritage, Indigenous histories and knowledges, oral history and memory, workplace-integrated learning through an industry engagement unit, and a final-year capstone project that integrates research, analytical and professional skills. The curriculum develops expertise in critical thinking, evidence-based interpretation, research design and communication, preparing graduates for careers in archaeology, museums, cultural heritage management, conservation, government agencies, research institutions, education, consulting and related fields, while also providing a strong foundation for postgraduate study and professional research.
