COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of History with a major in Ancient History is structured into a Core Zone and Major Requirements, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of historical research and the civilizations of the ancient world. The Core Zone comprises 160 credit points and includes 70 credit points of essential units that develop foundational knowledge and research skills through subjects such as Written Words: The Sources for Ancient History, Digging up the Past, History Now!, History and Heritage, Indigenous Histories and Knowledges, and Oral History and Memory: Voices Across Time. Students also complete PACE: Working with History, gaining practical workplace experience, followed by the Bachelor of History Capstone, which integrates the knowledge and professional skills developed throughout the degree. The Ancient History major consists of 80 credit points and focuses on the history, culture, politics, and societies of the ancient Mediterranean and Western Asia. Students begin with introductory units covering ancient history, Western Asia, and Egypt before progressing to specialised studies including Rome and the Caesars, Ancient Egypt: Culture and Society, and The State in the Ancient Greek World. Advanced units explore important social and political themes such as Women and Gender in the Ancient World, Slavery in the Ancient World, and Leadership in the Ancient World. This curriculum develops strong analytical, research, historical interpretation, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in archaeology, museums, cultural heritage, education, public history, research, publishing, and government.
