COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts with an English major is structured into three main components: Core Zone, Major Requirements, and Flexible Zone. The Core Zone consists of 160 credit points and provides the foundational structure of the degree. It includes essential introductory units such as Humanities and the World and Critical Thinking, along with a final-year Capstone unit that integrates learning across the program. Students also complete PACE (Practical, Academic, and Cultural Engagement) units, which offer applied learning experiences through internships, communication projects, or media-related professional activities. Additional elective options allow students to participate in international exchange or complete a minor, supporting flexibility and interdisciplinary study. The English major consists of 80 credit points focused on the study of literature, language, and critical analysis. Core units include Literature: Medieval to Modern and Literature: Modern and Contemporary, which provide a foundation in literary history and interpretation. Students then progress through specialised units such as The Human Story: Heart, Mind and Body in Early Literature, Revolution, Evolution, Humanity: Literature and Change in the Long Nineteenth Century, Historical Fiction and a Passion for the Past, Popular Fiction, Critical Approaches to Literature, and Literary Responses to Global Issues. These units develop strong analytical, interpretive, and communication skills. The Flexible Zone accounts for 80 credit points, allowing students to pursue a second major or minor in disciplines such as media, sociology, languages, or arts, preparing graduates for careers in writing, education, media, publishing, and communications.
