COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts with a Critical Indigenous Studies major is organised into three main components: Core Zone, Major Requirements, and Flexible Zone. The Core Zone consists of 160 credit points and provides the foundational structure of the degree. It includes essential introductory units such as Humanities and the World and Critical Thinking, along with a final-year Capstone unit that integrates knowledge gained throughout the program. Students also complete PACE (Practical, Academic, and Cultural Engagement) units, which offer applied learning experiences through internships, social impact projects, or communication-focused activities. Additional elective options allow students to participate in international exchange or complete a minor, supporting flexibility and interdisciplinary study. The Critical Indigenous Studies major consists of 80 credit points focused on Indigenous histories, cultures, perspectives, and knowledge systems. Core units include Indigenous Australia and Dharug Ngurra, which introduce foundational cultural and historical knowledge. Advanced units such as Indigenous Genders and Sexualities, Indigenous Histories and Knowledges, Indigenous Research and Practice, Coloniality and Modernity, and Colonialism, Capitalism and Nationalism explore critical perspectives on Indigenous experiences, power structures, and social change. These subjects emphasise ethical engagement and Indigenous-led research approaches. The Flexible Zone provides another 80 credit points, allowing students to pursue a second major or minor in fields such as sociology, media, languages, business, or arts. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in advocacy, education, policy, community development, and cultural organisations.
