COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts with a Chinese Studies major at Macquarie University is structured into three main components: Core Zone, Major Requirements, and Flexible Zone. The Core Zone comprises 160 credit points and includes essential foundational units such as Humanities and the World and Critical Thinking, along with a Capstone unit completed in the final year that integrates learning across the degree. Students also complete PACE units, which provide practical learning opportunities such as internships, social impact projects, or communication-focused activities. Additional elective options allow students to undertake an international exchange or complete a minor in another discipline, offering flexibility and global exposure. The Chinese Studies major consists of 80 credit points designed to build strong language proficiency and cultural understanding. It includes core interdisciplinary units such as Strategic Communication and Cultural Narratives and Language, Literature, Translation: Intercultural Perspectives. Students also progress through structured Chinese language units from beginner to advanced levels, developing skills in speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension. Advanced electives allow further study in areas such as international studies, media, and intercultural communication. The Flexible Zone provides another 80 credit points, enabling students to pursue a second major or minor in fields such as business, media, sociology, languages, or science.
