COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts (Anthropology major) at Macquarie University is structured into three main study zones: Core Zone, Major Requirements, and Flexible Zone. The Core Zone includes 160 credit points that provide the foundation of the degree. It consists of essential introductory units such as Humanities and the World and Critical Thinking, along with a Capstone unit that integrates learning from across the program. Students also complete PACE (Practical, Academic, and Cultural Engagement) units, which offer practical learning experiences such as internships, social impact projects, or media and communication campaigns. Additionally, students can choose elective units or participate in an international exchange experience, allowing for flexibility and global exposure. The Anthropology major itself comprises 80 credit points of core disciplinary units that build deep knowledge of human societies and cultures. These include foundational and advanced subjects such as introduction to anthropology, food and culture, religion and society, anthropology of power and politics, development studies, and ethnographic research methods. The Flexible Zone also accounts for 80 credit points, allowing students to broaden their studies by selecting a second major, minor, or additional electives from a wide range of disciplines such as sociology, media, history, languages, business, or science. Overall, the program is designed to provide both specialised anthropological knowledge and interdisciplinary flexibility to prepare graduates for diverse career pathways.
