COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Speech Pathology consists of 240 credit points of core study designed to develop the professional knowledge, clinical skills and practical capabilities required for speech pathology practice. The first level of the course provides students with a strong foundation in communication, swallowing, speech and language development across the lifespan. Students explore the structures and processes involved in speech and language, gaining an understanding of how communication abilities develop and how disorders can affect individuals at different stages of life. Core subjects in lifespan communication and swallowing build essential skills in assessing and supporting people with diverse communication and swallowing needs. Students are introduced to speech pathology practice through theoretical learning and practical activities that develop clinical reasoning, professional communication and intervention planning abilities. The course also emphasises evidence-based practice, teaching students how to evaluate research and apply current evidence to clinical decision-making. Indigenous cultural literacy is incorporated to support culturally safe and inclusive healthcare approaches. Through integrated learning experiences, students develop the foundation required to assess communication and swallowing difficulties, plan appropriate interventions and work collaboratively with clients, families and healthcare teams. This first level prepares students for advanced clinical training and professional practice in speech pathology across healthcare, education and community settings.
