COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Social Work consists of 240 credit points of core study designed to develop the knowledge, practical skills and professional values required for effective social work practice. The first level of the course introduces students to contemporary social work principles, professional pathways and the diverse roles social workers undertake in supporting individuals, families and communities. Students explore social work practice with individuals, families and groups, developing skills in assessment, relationship building, intervention planning and client-centred approaches. The course examines key areas including fields of social work practice, law, human rights and ethics, helping students understand the legal and ethical responsibilities that guide professional decision-making. Students also develop capabilities in program design and evaluation, learning how to create, implement and assess initiatives that respond to social welfare needs. Professional Practice 1 provides valuable opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, strengthening communication, critical thinking and reflective practice skills under professional guidance. The curriculum also incorporates Indigenous cultural literacy to promote respectful, inclusive and culturally safe approaches to social work. Through integrated academic learning and practical experience, students build the foundation needed to address complex social issues, advocate for vulnerable populations and contribute positively to community wellbeing across diverse practice environments.
