COURSE CURRICULUM

The Software Engineering specialisation within the Master of Information Technology at La Trobe University is structured to provide students with advanced knowledge and practical skills required to design, develop, test, and manage modern software systems. The program consists of 240 credit points, combining core information technology studies with specialised software engineering learning. In the first level, students complete 90 credit points of core subjects, including Information Technology Fundamentals, Database Fundamentals, Network Engineering Fundamentals, Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals, Cyber Security Principles, Introduction to Programming, and the Academic Integrity Module. These subjects establish essential skills in computing, programming, databases, networking, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies. Students also complete 30 credit points from their chosen specialisation, allowing them to build foundational expertise in software development. In the second level, students undertake core subjects in Project Management and Professional Practices and Entrepreneurship in Information Technology, strengthening their professional and industry capabilities. Students then complete 30 credit points of additional specialisation subjects and a 60-credit-point Software Engineering specialisation stream. This pathway enables students to explore advanced software design, development methodologies, software architecture, algorithms, data structures, automated testing, and system management. Through theoretical study and practical application, graduates develop the ability to create reliable, scalable, and innovative software solutions. The specialisation prepares students for careers in software engineering, application development, systems design, software testing, and technology-driven industries requiring skilled software professionals.
