COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematical Data Science specialisation within the Master of Data Science at La Trobe University is designed to develop advanced mathematical, statistical, and analytical capabilities required to solve complex data-driven problems. As part of the 240-credit-point program, students first complete core data science subjects including Data Exploration and Analysis, Database Fundamentals, Introduction to Programming, Mathematics for Data Science, and Probability and Statistics for Data Science. These subjects provide a strong foundation in computational methods, programming, database management, mathematical modelling, and statistical analysis. Students then undertake 30 credit points from the Mathematical Data Science specialisation along with 15 credit points of electives, allowing them to enhance their expertise in mathematical approaches to data analysis and modelling. In the second level, students complete core subjects in Big Data Management on the Cloud and Professional Practices and Entrepreneurship in Information Technology, followed by additional specialisation subjects. The final 60 credit points are completed through a chosen learning pathway, including a Statistics Thesis, Computer Science Thesis, Computer Science Industry Project, Statistics Industry-Based Learning, or Computer Science Industry-Based Learning. These pathways enable students to gain research experience, industry exposure, and practical problem-solving skills. The specialisation prepares graduates to apply advanced mathematical techniques, statistical models, and computational methods to address complex challenges in data science, research, technology, finance, healthcare, and other data-intensive fields.
