COURSE CURRICULUM

The Business Applications specialisation within the Master of Data Science at La Trobe University is structured as part of the 240-credit-point program, combining fundamental data science knowledge with advanced business-focused analytical skills. In the first level, students complete 75 credit points of core subjects, including Data Exploration and Analysis, Database Fundamentals, Introduction to Programming, Mathematics for Data Science, and Probability and Statistics for Data Science. These subjects establish essential capabilities in programming, data management, statistical analysis, and quantitative methods. Students also complete 30 credit points from the Business Applications specialisation and 15 credit points of electives, allowing them to develop expertise in applying data science techniques to business contexts. In the second level, students undertake core subjects in Big Data Management on the Cloud and Professional Practices and Entrepreneurship in Information Technology, along with an additional 30 credit points of specialisation subjects. Students then select a 60-credit-point learning pathway based on their career objectives, including options such as a Statistics Thesis, Computer Science Thesis, Computer Science Industry Project, Statistics Industry-Based Learning, or Computer Science Industry-Based Learning. These pathways provide opportunities to gain research experience, complete industry projects, or undertake professional placements. Through this structure, the specialisation develops graduates who can apply data-driven strategies, predictive modelling, business analytics, and modern data science tools to solve real-world organisational challenges and pursue careers in business intelligence, financial analysis, marketing analytics, and data-driven decision-making.
