COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bioinformatics specialisation within the Master of Data Science at La Trobe University is completed as part of the 240-credit-point program and combines core data science studies with specialised bioinformatics training and flexible learning pathways. In the first level, students complete foundational core subjects including Data Exploration and Analysis, Database Fundamentals, Introduction to Programming, Mathematics for Data Science, and Probability and Statistics for Data Science, which develop essential competencies in programming, statistical analysis, database management, and quantitative problem-solving. Students also undertake 30 credit points of bioinformatics specialisation subjects and 15 credit points of electives, allowing them to begin building expertise in applying data science techniques to biological and health-related data. In the second level, students complete core subjects in Big Data Management on the Cloud and Professional Practices and Entrepreneurship in Information Technology, followed by an additional 30 credit points of specialised bioinformatics study. The program concludes with a 60-credit-point learning pathway, enabling students to choose from options such as a Computer Science Thesis, Statistics Thesis, Computer Science Industry Project, Computer Science Industry-Based Learning, or Statistics Industry-Based Learning. These pathways provide opportunities for research, industry projects, professional placements, or applied learning experiences. This structured curriculum equips graduates with advanced analytical, computational, and research skills required to analyse complex biological datasets and pursue careers in bioinformatics, healthcare, biotechnology, pharmaceutical research, and computational life sciences.
