COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Archaeology with the Professional Archaeology specialisation consists of 240 credit points structured across two levels to provide students with comprehensive academic knowledge and practical professional training. Level One comprises 120 credit points of core subjects that establish a strong foundation in archaeological theory, research, and field practice. Students complete the Academic Integrity Module, Research Skills, Archaeology of Aboriginal Victoria, Practical Archaeology, The Archaeology of Australia’s First Peoples, Objects, Things and Artefacts (Managing and Recording), Objects, Things and Artefacts (Analysing and Understanding), and Archaeology of Australia Since 1788. These subjects develop essential competencies in archaeological research, excavation techniques, artefact recording and analysis, heritage interpretation, and the study of Indigenous and historical archaeology in Australia. Level Two consists of a 60-credit-point Professional Archaeology specialisation, which focuses on preparing students for careers in the archaeology and cultural heritage sectors. The specialisation builds advanced knowledge of professional archaeological practice, heritage legislation, ethical standards, cultural heritage management, and industry-based methods required for working in Australia's heritage sector. Through a combination of theoretical learning and practical application, students strengthen their analytical, communication, and project management skills while gaining the expertise needed to work as professional archaeologists, heritage consultants, cultural heritage advisors, or related professionals in government, museums, consulting firms, and heritage organisations.
