COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Archaeology program comprises 240 credit points, divided equally across two levels to provide a balanced combination of foundational knowledge, practical training, research expertise, and specialised study. Level One consists of 120 credit points of core subjects that introduce students to academic integrity, research skills, practical archaeology, and the archaeology of Aboriginal Victoria and Australia's First Peoples. Students also develop expertise in managing, recording, analysing, and interpreting archaeological objects, artefacts, and materials while examining Australia's archaeological history since 1788. These subjects build strong theoretical, analytical, and fieldwork competencies essential for professional archaeological practice. Level Two includes 120 credit points, consisting of a 60-credit-point specialisation and 60 credit points of electives or an optional second specialisation. Students choosing the Advanced Research specialisation undertake focused research training to strengthen their independent research capabilities. Elective subjects allow students to expand their expertise in areas such as professional archaeology, archaeological research methods, human and animal bones, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), industry placement, historical and archival research, cross-cultural management, project management, Indigenous peoples and the law, or a master's research thesis/project. This flexible course structure enables students to tailor their studies according to their academic interests and career aspirations while developing advanced research, analytical, and professional skills for archaeology-related careers or doctoral study.
