COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Visual Arts at La Trobe University requires students to complete 360 credit points, consisting of 180 credit points of core subjects and 180 credit points completed through an open-access major, minor, and/or elective subjects. The course structure combines practical studio training, art theory, visual culture studies, and professional development to support students in building a creative practice. In the first year, students study foundations of visual arts through subjects exploring modernity, art, film, visual cultures, identity, and representation, while developing practical skills in drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and photography. In the second year, students expand their artistic knowledge through studies of influential artworks, museums, colonialism, collecting practices, and contemporary studio methods including painting, installation, video, and performance. The third year focuses on advanced creative development through independent studio projects, contemporary visual cultures, and themes such as landscape, land art, and environmental ethics. Students complete a capstone experience that allows them to produce and refine their own artistic work. The remaining credit points can be used to pursue additional areas of interest through majors, minors, or electives across the university. Graduates develop creative, critical, research, and professional skills suitable for careers in visual arts, galleries, museums, cultural organisations, creative industries, education, and artistic practice.
