COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics (Honours) at La Trobe University requires students to complete 480 credit points, including 420 core credit points and a 60 credit point minor. The four-year program is designed to develop the scientific knowledge, technical abilities, and clinical skills required to become a qualified prosthetist and orthotist. In the first year, students build foundational understanding through subjects covering human biosciences, anatomy, health and wellbeing, professional communication, clinical biomechanics, prosthetics and orthotics technologies, research methods, and introductory orthotic practice. The second year focuses on advancing clinical knowledge through applied anatomy, pathophysiology, clinical orthotics, prosthetic management, assistive technology, user-centred design, acute clinical management, and patient assessment techniques. In the third year, students develop specialised expertise in prosthetic and orthotic care through studies in transtibial prosthetics, advanced prosthetic management, orthotic management, applied clinical research, disability perspectives, and evidence-based practice. The final year emphasizes professional preparation through advanced clinical education, extended clinical placements, and development of practical prosthetic and orthotic skills. Students also complete subjects within their chosen minor, allowing them to focus on industry or research interests. Throughout the course, students develop skills in assessment, device design, fabrication, prescription, rehabilitation, and patient-centred care. The combination of academic study, clinical experience, and hands-on training prepares graduates to support individuals with mobility challenges in healthcare and rehabilitation settings.
