COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) at La Trobe University requires students to complete 480 credit points, consisting of 435 credit points of core subjects and a 45 credit point Honours component, which can be completed through an Individual Honours Project or Coursework Honours. The four-year program is designed to develop the scientific knowledge, clinical skills, and professional capabilities required for pharmacy practice. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through studies in biology, chemistry, human biosciences, pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical formulation, research methods, and data analysis. The second year expands students’ understanding of medicines through subjects covering medicinal and organic chemistry, quality use of medicines, pharmacology, infections and pandemics, digital health, metabolic biochemistry, and pharmacy therapeutics, including cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. In the third year, students develop advanced pharmaceutical knowledge through clinical biochemistry, haematology, biopharmaceutics, pharmaceutical formulation, biomedical science applications, First Nations health, and therapeutic areas such as endocrine disorders, psychiatry, neurology, and anti-infective treatments. The final year focuses on advanced pharmacy practice, professional development, and completion of the Honours component through research or coursework. Throughout the program, students gain expertise in medication management, patient-centred care, clinical decision-making, and evidence-based practice. The course integrates scientific learning with practical pharmacy training, preparing graduates for professional pharmacy careers and eligibility to complete further requirements for pharmacist registration.
