COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Paramedic Practice with Honours at La Trobe University requires students to complete 480 credit points, consisting of 390 credit points of core subjects, 15 credit points of electives, and 75 credit points of core-choice subjects. The four-year program is designed to develop advanced knowledge, clinical skills, and professional capabilities required for paramedic practice. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through studies in anatomy and physiology, health and wellbeing, rural community engagement, research and evidence-based practice, legal and ethical paramedic practice, and First Nations health. Students also develop professional communication skills through core-choice subjects. The second year focuses on developing practical paramedic abilities through subjects covering foundations of paramedic practice, communication skills, pharmacology, evidence-based practice, cardiac and respiratory care, trauma management, and introductory clinical practice. In the third year, students advance their expertise in complex emergency care through studies in obstetrics, paediatrics, gerontology, medical management, integrated cardiac and respiratory care, and complex trauma management. Students also choose an Honours pathway through either industry-focused learning or research project planning. The final year emphasizes advanced paramedic practice, professional development, and Honours-level learning. Throughout the course, students gain clinical reasoning, decision-making, communication, and emergency response skills through theoretical study, practical training, and workplace experiences, preparing them for professional paramedic careers and further postgraduate research opportunities.
