COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Oral Health Science at La Trobe University requires students to complete 360 credit points, consisting entirely of core subjects designed to develop professional oral healthcare knowledge and clinical skills. The three-year program integrates scientific learning, practical training, research, and community engagement to prepare students for careers as oral health practitioners. In the first year, students build essential foundations through subjects covering oral health practice, scientific and clinical knowledge, dental science, preclinical oral health simulated practice, rural community engagement, and research and evidence-based practice. These studies introduce students to oral healthcare principles, dental procedures, and the relationship between oral health and overall wellbeing. The second year focuses on advancing students’ clinical capabilities through subjects in scientific and clinical knowledge, preclinical skills, introduction to clinical practice, oral health promotion, general medicine, and medicine for dentistry. Students develop practical abilities in patient care, diagnosis, treatment planning, and preventive oral health practices while gaining a deeper understanding of medical factors affecting dental care. The final year continues advanced clinical education and professional development, preparing students to provide safe and effective oral healthcare services. Throughout the course, students gain experience in evidence-based practice, communication, cultural awareness, and patient management. The program combines classroom learning with clinical experience to develop skilled oral health professionals capable of improving oral health outcomes within diverse communities.
