COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours) at La Trobe University requires students to complete 480 credit points, including core occupational therapy subjects and a 60 credit point minor. The four-year program is designed to develop the knowledge, clinical skills, and professional capabilities required to become an effective occupational therapist. In the first year, students establish foundations in human biosciences, anatomy, professional communication, health and wellbeing, occupational science, research methods, and diverse perspectives on occupation and health, including the needs of people with developmental disabilities. The second year expands students’ understanding of occupational therapy practice through subjects covering evidence-based practice, occupational foundations, psychology, applied anatomy, psychosocial practice, group work, pathophysiology, and participation in diverse communities. In the third year, students develop advanced clinical skills through subjects focused on occupational therapy practice, musculoskeletal and neurological conditions, children and families, body structure and function, advanced professional practice, and professional placement experience. The final year emphasizes transition to professional practice through advanced placements and practical training, supported by studies within the chosen minor area. Throughout the course, students develop skills in assessment, intervention planning, communication, research, teamwork, and culturally responsive healthcare. The program combines academic learning with extensive professional experience, preparing graduates to apply for registration as occupational therapists and support people in achieving independence, participation, and improved quality of life.
